Schools in Denmark will ban the use of smartphones

Denmark plans to oblige schools to ban mobile phone use by students. In addition, a government commission recommended that children under 13 should not have their own smartphone or tablet at all. About this informs The Guardian.

Currently, the country’s government is preparing relevant legislative changes. At the same time, many European countries are increasingly introducing restrictions on children’s access to phones and social networks.

The Danish Welfare Commission, established by Prime Minister Mette Frederiksen in 2023, has published a report which states that children and young people are losing the balance between digital and real life. The document contains 35 recommendations, including a legal ban on smartphones in schools and after-school clubs.

The Minister of Children and Education, Matthias Tesfaye, emphasized that it is necessary to return to the role of the school as a space for learning and reflection, “not a continuation of the teenage bedroom”. He emphasized that smartphones have no place at school – neither during lessons nor during breaks.

At the same time, it is assumed that local authorities will be able to make exceptions, in particular for children with special educational needs.
