Shazam has set an unprecedented record: 100 billion identifiable songs

Shazam, the popular music recognition service, has reached an impressive milestone: users have already identified more than 100 billion songs through it. These numbers are so large that to achieve them, one person would have to spend more than three thousand years recognizing one song every second!

Apple, which has owned Shazam since 2018, reports:

“Since its launch, Shazam has officially surpassed 100 billion recognized songs.

This is equivalent to 12 songs defined for every person on Earth.

It would take a person using Shazam to identify a song every second for 3,168 years to reach 100 billion.

That’s more than 2,200 times the identifications of Shazam’s most popular song, Dance Monkey, with over 45 million tags.”

Shazam Predictions 2023 graduate Benson Boone’s “Beautiful Things” became the first track released this year to reach 10 million recognitions, and the fastest in 178 days. At this rate, it will take over 4,800 years to reach 100 billion.

“This monumental milestone reflects not only how much people enjoy using Shazam, but also their appetite for new music. Music discovery is at the heart of everything we do, and we continue to innovate to ensure that music lovers around the world can tap a button Shazam no matter where they hear the music!”, – said Oliver Schusser, vice president of Apple Music and Beats.

The history of Shazam began in 2002, when it appeared in the UK as an SMS service. In 2008, the service debuted as an iOS application in the App Store, and by 2011, Shazam already had more than a billion identified tracks. Today, the number of songs found has exceeded 100 billion, which is an average of 12 tracks for every inhabitant of the Earth.

Since 2018, Shazam is owned by Apple. According to Apple, the most popular song in Shazam history is Dance Monkey by Tones and I, which has been searched more than 45 million times. To celebrate the achievement, Apple even created a playlist of the top 100 tracks searched by Shazam users and made it available on Apple Music.

This service has become a real musical revolution in more than 20 years of its existence. It helps millions of people around the world discover new songs they hear but don’t know the name of, and its statistics show how much music is an integral part of our lives
