Since the beginning of the full-scale invasion in Ukraine, about 10 thousand kilometers of railway tracks have been damaged, destroyed or lost. This information was provided by JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia”.
” Since February 24, 2022, almost 10,000 were damaged, destroyed or lost. km of tracks and 43 station buildings. There is also damage to other infrastructure facilities“, the message said.
According to the Kyiv School of Economics (KSE) report, which covers the period from February 2022 to January 2024, the total amount of damaged railway track is approximately 507 kilometers. 126 railway stations and stations were destroyed or damaged, of which more than 55 are located on the territory controlled by Ukraine, the rest – on temporarily occupied territory.
In particular, more than 700 kilometers of railway tracks are located in the temporarily occupied territory. In total, Ukrzaliznytsia lost about 5,500 buildings and about 4,000 other structures. Movable company property that fails to evacuate is considered lost, destroyed, or captured by occupying forces.
KSE analysts estimated direct damage to the railway infrastructure at $4.3 billion.
“Railwaymen are restoring tracks damaged by the enemy. Thus, since the beginning of the full-scale invasion, more than 3,600 have been partially and completely restored. km of tracks, 41 station buildings and other infrastructure facilities to keep trains running“, JSC “Ukrzaliznytsia” reported.
According to the company, during seasonal repairs in the first eight months of 2024, 737.6 kilometers of tracks have already been repaired, which is 62% of the planned volume for the year. By the end of the year, it is planned to restore more than 1,195 kilometers of tracks and 1,073 switches.
Earlier it was reported that in the Dnipropetrovsk region, as a result of shelling of the railway station on November 2, a worker was injured and the station building was damaged.
