Slovakia will continue to supply electricity to Ukraine, despite Fico’s threats

The state-owned company SEPS, the operator of the Slovak power transmission system, has confirmed its readiness to provide electricity to Ukraine within the framework of emergency assistance, in accordance with the current contract concluded with the Ukrainian company Ukrenergo. About this informs iROZHLAS.

The SEPS notice states that cross-border electricity transmission in all directions is carried out in the standard mode. Having suffered from attacks on its energy infrastructure, Ukraine imports electricity from neighboring countries, including Slovakia.

In the spring of last year, SEPS extended the contract for 12 months, which allows the supply of up to 150 megawatts of electricity to the Ukrainian power system within the limits of emergency assistance. Ukraine has already used this support many times. According to the company, for 11 months of last year, the volume of net export of electricity from Slovakia to Ukraine amounted to 2.43 terawatt-hours, which is three times higher than the figures for the same period in 2023.

The former Minister of Economy of Slovakia, Karel Girman, emphasized that the supply of electricity to Ukraine is carried out by private traders, not the state, and the artificial restriction of electricity export would contradict both European and Slovak legislation. He also noted that the termination of electricity supply to Ukraine could provoke a conflict between Slovakia and the European Union.

We will remind that the Prime Minister of Slovakia, Robert Fico, has recently repeatedly expressed threats to Kyiv, stating the possible termination of electricity supply in response to the completion of the transit of Russian gas through Ukraine after the end of the contract between Gazprom and Naftogaz.
