Slovenia joined the PURL program for the purchase of weapons for the Armed Forces
Slovenia joins the PURL program for the purchase of American weapons for the Armed Forces of Ukraine at the expense of NATO allies. This was announced Prime Minister of Slovenia Robert Golob during a joint press conference with NATO Secretary General Mark Rutte in Ljubljana.
Commenting on the latest Russian attacks on Ukrainian cities and infrastructure, he emphasized: “protecting Ukrainians is our duty”.
“That is why Slovenia decided to join the PURL initiative in order to protect civilians and infrastructure, which is even more important now on the eve of winter”, said Golob.
When asked about the amount of funding for the program, the prime minister replied that he could not disclose the amount because it is classified:
“I do not have the authority to declassify it now. But it is within the budget of the Ministry of Defense for 2025. So it’s not an additional cost. I would like to emphasize this.
He clarified that these funds will be directed to “defense capability and air defense in order to protect energy and civil infrastructure” of Ukraine.
“Slovenia has been sending Ukraine exclusively defense equipment for quite some time. And this also applies to this package, – added Golob.
Let us remind you that on July 14, the USA and NATO signed the Prioritized Ukraine Requirements List agreement, which provides for the supply of American weapons to Ukraine at the expense of European states. The Secretary General of the Alliance, Mark Rutte, noted that within the framework of this program, Kyiv can receive a significant number of air defense systems, missiles and ammunition.
Denmark has already committed around DKK 580 million through the PURL initiative, Sweden $275 million and Norway approximately $135 million. At the same time, the Netherlands financed the first aid package in the amount of 500 million euros. Germany also joined the program.
