Sweden prepares grain reserves in case of war
Swedish authorities have decided to create reserve stocks of grain for four northern regions of the country, which are of strategic importance in the event of a possible war. This is reports the press service of the Swedish government.
Reserve granaries are planned to be arranged in the four northernmost fiefs – Norrbotten, Västerbotten, Westernorrland and Emtland. The government allocates 575 million Swedish kroner (about 60 million dollars) for the purchase of grain. The peculiarity of the project is that the stocks will be regularly updated so that the grain always remains suitable for use.
“Northern Sweden is of strategic military importance and is a priority region for the general defense system. It is no coincidence that this is where the first steps are taken to create reserve grain stocks. This is based on the idea of providing the population with food even in difficult times, – emphasized the Minister of Civil Defense Karl-Oscar Bolin.
Minister of Agriculture Peter Kullgren noted that the government plans to create similar granaries throughout the country in the future. The corresponding funds have already been included in the budget for 2026-2028.
