Swiss authorities will simplify the employment of Ukrainian refugees with S status
Since the beginning of the full-scale Russian invasion, millions of Ukrainians have been forced to seek safety outside their country. One of the countries that promptly provided them with asylum and assistance was Switzerland. Thanks to the introduction of the special protection status S, Ukrainian refugees got the opportunity to stay in this country, use medical services and receive social support.
However, for full integration into the new society, it is necessary not only to provide housing and basic services, but also to provide the opportunity to work. Access to the labor market allows Ukrainians to be economically independent, reduces the burden on the social systems of the state and promotes their adaptation in local communities.
The main changes in the employment of Ukrainians
Federal Council of Switzerland approved new measures that should significantly simplify the employment process for Ukrainians. This will not only improve their situation, but also allow the country to benefit from the skills and experience of the new workers, which will be a mutually beneficial solution for both the refugees and Switzerland itself.
One of the main innovations was the abolition of the mandatory permit from the cantonal authorities for Ukrainians with S status who find work. Previously, this permission could delay the employment process, and in some cases even involved additional financial costs.
Restrictions on changing residence within the country have also been lifted. Previously, refugees who were in one canton faced difficulties in moving to another, even if there were better job prospects there. Now Ukrainians can more freely choose a place to live and work, which will allow them to integrate more quickly into the Swiss economy.
Another important decision was the obligation of unemployed Ukrainians to register at state employment centers. They must also participate in professional integration programs that include language courses, retraining and job search support. Such measures will significantly increase the chances of Ukrainian refugees to find a decent job in Switzerland.
The Swiss Federal Council is also considering the possibility of making it easier for third-country nationals who have studied in Switzerland to enter the labor market. This means that foreigners who have been educated in the country will be able to stay and work here more easily after completing their studies.
What is the protection status of S
Status S was introduced in March 2022 specifically for Ukrainian refugees. Unlike the asylum procedure, this status allows Ukrainians to gain faster access to housing, financial assistance, medical services and education.
As of today, about 66,000 Ukrainians in Switzerland have S protection status. The Federal Council has already decided to extend it until at least 2026, which allows Ukrainians to plan their future and feel more confident in this country.
Simplifying employment for Ukrainians in Switzerland is an important step in several directions. First, it helps the refugees themselves to integrate into society and become financially independent. Second, it is beneficial for the Swiss economy, which gains access to new workers ready to fill vacancies in various fields.
