Taliban ban windows overlooking women’s places

The leader of the Taliban group has issued a decree mandating the construction of new residential buildings without windows overlooking areas usually used by women. In houses that already have such windows, they must be blocked. About this informs France 24.

According to the ordinance, new buildings must avoid windows that overlook “yards, kitchens, neighbors’ wells, and other places where women may be.”

“Seeing women working in kitchens, yards or collecting water from wells can lead to indecent acts,” – says the decree.

Control over the implementation of this rule is entrusted to local authorities and relevant construction departments. They must ensure that new projects meet the requirements, and in old buildings, problematic windows are closed or bricked up. In case of violation, the owners will be required to install walls or other barriers to avoid conflicts with neighbors.

The decree is another step in a series of restrictions the Taliban has imposed on women since returning to power in August 2021. In particular, women are prohibited from obtaining higher education, working in many fields, visiting parks, gyms and public spaces. A ban on singing and reciting poetry in front of the public was also introduced, and some media stopped broadcasting women’s voices.
