Tesla discontinued the cheapest version of the Cybertruck due to low demand
Tesla has discontinued production of the most affordable version of the Cybertruck electric pickup less than five months after its launch due to low demand. This is reported by Electrek.
Modification with rear wheel drive (RWD) appeared in April 2025 as a cheaper alternative to the all-wheel drive model, which cost from 80 thousand dollars. Its price was 70,000 dollars, but to make it cheaper, the manufacturer removed several key options.
The RWD version did not have active air suspension, a motorized trunk lid, and power outlets in the body. In addition, instead of two electric motors, only one was installed. Such limitations made the model unattractive to buyers, and Tesla decided to remove it from the online configurator without introducing a replacement.
The launch of the RWD version was the company’s attempt to boost Cybertruck sales, which were far below expectations. Despite claims of more than a million pre-orders and plans to produce up to 250,000 cars each year (with a potential increase to 500,000), the actual sales level is approximately 20,000 cars per year.
The main reasons for the low demand were the inflated price and characteristics that turned out to be weaker than promised at the initial stage. Analysts predict that in 2026, Tesla may present an updated version of the Cybertruck, close to the originally announced parameters, to test whether interest among buyers will increase.
