The Bundestag voted to dissolve the Scholz government

The majority of members of the German parliament expressed their lack of confidence in Olaf Scholz’s government, which led to the decision to hold early elections. About this informs Picture.

A total of 733 members of the Bundestag took part in the vote of confidence in the government. Before the start of voting, Chancellor Olaf Scholz and representatives of the parliamentary parties exchanged mutual accusations.

394 deputies voted for the dissolution of the government and the announcement of new elections, which exceeds the required minimum of 367 votes. Preliminary elections are scheduled for February 23 next year.

Within three weeks, this decision must be approved by German President Frank-Walter Steinmeier. Although he could theoretically keep Scholz in office in the form of a minority government, German experts consider such a scenario unlikely.

Earlier, the ruling coalition in Germany fell apart. The reason for this was Olaf Scholz’s decision to fire Finance Minister Christian Lindner, who represented the coalition Free Democratic Party (VDP).

In the history of Germany, the question of confidence in the government has been brought before the Bundestag five times. In particular, in 1972, Willy Brandt initiated new elections, which provided his party with record support. In 2005, Gerhard Schröder similarly used this mechanism, which eventually led to Angela Merkel coming to power.
