Children of war

The dog warmed the missing boy all night: it became known how the search for the child in the Vinnytsia region ended

In times of war, when society’s attention is focused on security issues, children’s lives remain vulnerable not only to external threats, but also to ordinary accidents that can happen at any moment. Disappearances of children are always a cause for great concern, because the level of danger increases significantly during times of war. Fortunately, not all such stories end tragically. One of these was a recent adventure in the Vinnytsia region, which ended in a happy rescue thanks to human concern and the animal’s devotion.

On March 11, a three-year-old boy named Ostap disappeared in the village of Chernivtsi, Mohyliv-Podilsky District, Vinnytsia Region. The child went outside the grandmother’s yard with the dog. This event caused a wave of anxiety among local residents and law enforcement officers. The unknown, the darkness of the night, the cold, and the risks associated with the child being alone forced all possible forces to be mobilized to search for her.

More than 300 people were involved in the search for the boy: local police officers and dog handlers with service dogs, rescuers, border guards, military personnel, and residents of the village. Law enforcement officers inspected abandoned buildings, thickets, wells, ravines, and fields. Service dogs, drones, and organized groups were used to comb forest strips, thickets, ravines, wells, and abandoned buildings. Work continued all night. With every hour, concern for the child’s fate grew, because the weather conditions were difficult: it was raining, the air temperature was low, which posed a serious threat to the health of a small child. But in the morning, the search operation ended happily. She reported about it police of Vinnytsia.

Ostap was found in a ravine at a local landfill, a few kilometers from his grandmother’s house. His faithful friend – the dog Barbos – remained with him all this time. The animal did not leave the boy, warmed him with its body and, perhaps, helped save the child’s life. It was this devotion and the dog’s natural intuition that became the decisive factor in saving little Ostap.

Doctors who examined the child after the rescue diagnosed hypothermia, but the boy’s condition was relatively satisfactory. He was taken to the hospital for further examination and provision of the necessary assistance. The police noted that the dog, staying nearby, largely warmed the boy on a rainy, cold night, which saved his life.

This story became a vivid example of human solidarity, caring and the power of animal loyalty. She once again reminds us how important it is to pay attention to children, especially in wartime, when stress and distraction can lead to dangerous situations. Even a short moment without supervision can turn into a danger.
