EU and the world

The EU called for the protection of civilians after the start of the US and Israeli operation against Iran

The European Union stated that, against the backdrop of the armed confrontation between the United States and Israel and Iran, the protection of civilians and strict adherence to international humanitarian law are of paramount importance. The EU’s chief diplomat Kaia Kallas published her position.

Kallas described the latest events in the Middle East as dangerous. At the same time, she emphasized that the Iranian authorities killed thousands of their own citizens during recent protests and support various terrorist groups in the region, creating risks to global security. She also mentioned the EU sanctions against Iran and the Union’s support for diplomatic efforts to resolve the issue of the Iranian nuclear program.

“I spoke with Israeli Foreign Minister Saar and other ministers in the region. The EU is also closely coordinating with Arab partners to find diplomatic ways.

The priority now is the protection of civilians and compliance with international humanitarian law. Our consular network is fully engaged in facilitating the departure of EU citizens,” Kallas stressed.

She added that the EU mission Aspides in the Red Sea is on high alert and ready to act to ensure the openness of the sea corridor.

French President Emmanuel Macron called the start of the US and Israel’s war against Iran a dangerous escalation and announced his intention to initiate a meeting of the UN Security Council.

As is known, on the morning of February 28, Donald Trump declared that the US had launched “large-scale combat operations in Iran.” Israel also carried out the strikes. In addition, Trump urged the Iranians not to miss the chance and overthrow the repressive regime.
