The European Commissioner for Trade went to the United States to negotiate tariff reductions

On April 14, European Union Trade Commissioner Maros Šefčovič traveled to Washington to negotiate tariffs imposed by the Donald Trump administration. This was stated by the spokesperson of the European Commission, Olof Gill. informs Political.

This will be Sefcovych’s third visit to the US since the beginning of Trump’s presidential term. During the trip, he will meet with American officials to discuss tariff policy.

“Our proposal is to mutually reduce tariffs to zero with our American friends,” – said Gill, referring to the initiative previously announced by the President of the European Commission, Ursula von der Leyen.

The purpose of the trip is to get a clearer picture of the American side’s readiness for negotiations, as well as to clarify its main priorities. However, despite constant calls for unity, there is no unified position within the European Union on how far to go for US concessions or how to act in the event of a failure of negotiations.

We will remind that on April 13, the president of the European Central Bank, Christina Lagarde, advised the EU finance ministers to refrain from public statements and allow the European Commission to exercise its powers in the field of foreign trade.
