The European Court of Human Rights found Russia guilty of violating the rights of the Ukrainian diaspora
The European Court of Human Rights issued a decision according to which it is recognized that Russia violated Article 11 of the European Convention on Human Rights by recognizing the World Congress of Ukrainians (WUC) as an “undesirable organization”.
About this it is said on the SKU website.
The court found that Russia’s interference was illegal and arbitrary because domestic law did not provide sufficient safeguards against abuse. In addition, Article 11 of the European Convention, which guarantees freedom of assembly and association, was violated.
The head of the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of the SCU Yevhen Choliy confirmed the validity of the ECHR’s decision, and the President of the SCU Pavlo Grod called on the international community to take measures to protect the Ukrainian minority from genocide by Russia.
“UCU congratulates the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of the World Congress of Ukrainians and its network for successfully leading this legal challenge and, in particular, its chairman and former UCU President Yevgen Choliy, former UCU Regional Vice President and legal representative in Russia Serhii Vinnyk, as well as former UCU Vice President Petro Shtyk. We are especially grateful to the law firm “Nazar Kulchytskyi and Partners”, in particular to partners Nazar Kulchytskyi and Markiyan Bem, who took on the mission of representing the World Congress of Ukrainians before the European Court of Human Rights on a pro bono basis and helped on the way to justice.”, – added Mr. Grod.
The SCU expressed its gratitude to the Committee for the Protection of the Rights of the SCU and its network, in particular to Yevhen Cholia, Serhiy Vinnyk, Petr Shtyk, and the “Nazar Kulchytskyi and Partners” bar association for their work in the case.
We will remind that the SCU was recognized as an “undesirable organization” in Russia in 2019, after which the SCU began the process of appealing this decision. In November 2021, the ECtHR accepted a lawsuit from the SCU alleging violation of the rights of the Ukrainian diaspora in Russia.
