The ex-head of the Kharkiv SIZO and six of his subordinates will be tried based on the materials of the SBI

Employees of the State Bureau of Investigation have completed a pre-trial investigation into the former head of the Kharkiv detention center and six of his subordinates – two operatives, an assistant chief of the regular shift, a senior officer and two junior inspectors. Their actions led to the death of the detainee. The indictment has been submitted to the court, reports the DBR press service.
According to the investigation materials, in April 2025, the detention center staff illegally placed the detainee in a cell together with the convict. Soon, the cellmate brutally beat the man, causing serious injuries. Despite the critical condition of the victim, the employees of the institution did not call doctors and transferred him to a separate cell without medical assistance. He died at night.
The examination confirmed that timely medical intervention could have saved his life. In order to hide their own actions, employees of the pre-trial detention center provided false information to the official authorities, concealing the illegal transfer and lack of medical assistance.
Depending on the role in the crime, the suspect is accused of exceeding power or official authority by a law enforcement officer, which caused serious consequences (Part 3 of Article 365 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine); leaving in danger, which led to the death of a person (Part 3 of Article 135 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine); official negligence that led to the death of a person (Part 3 of Article 367 of the Criminal Code of Ukraine). The sanctions of these articles provide for punishment of up to 10 years of imprisonment.
Separately, the National Police is investigating a convict who beat a cellmate. Procedural management is carried out by the Kharkiv Regional Prosecutor’s Office.
