The Hungarian government explained the blocking of Ukraine’s accession to the EU by public opinion

The Hungarian government explains the blocking of further advancement of Ukraine to the European Union by the results of an opinion poll, which showed that more than 70% of Hungarians oppose such a decision. This announced the Minister of European Affairs of Hungary Janusz Boka before the start of the EU General Affairs Council meeting.

“The political situation in Hungary is such that more than 70 percent of Hungarians do not support the continuation of Ukraine’s accession process. This is a political reality that we must take into account, the minister noted.

According to the position of Budapest, any mechanisms for advancing negotiations without agreement with all EU member states contradict the procedure used during the previous stages of enlargement.

Janush Boka also confirmed that he recently met with the Deputy Prime Minister of Ukraine for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka three times. He emphasized that these contacts cannot be considered full-fledged negotiations, but rather discussions aimed at building political trust.

“I would not call these meetings negotiations. I would rather call them discussions. We are trying to learn about each other’s positions and views and build a certain political trust, which can become the basis for further discussions, explained the minister.

Regarding Hungary’s position regarding the next package of EU sanctions against Russia, the minister noted that he cannot comment on it yet, as he has not yet familiarized himself with the project:

“I have not seen the next package of sanctions. I understand that the European Commission wanted to publish it today, but it has been postponed”.
