The IAEA records violations of six key principles of nuclear safety at the ZNPP
Six of the seven key principles of nuclear safety have been violated at the Zaporizhzhia nuclear power plant, and currently only one operational power line remains outside the site. This poses serious security risks, said IAEA chief Rafael Grossi during a meeting of the Board of Governors in Vienna.
“Only one power line outside the site remains functional, which creates serious security risks”, he noted.
Grossi said all six reactors are in a cold shutdown and none can be safely restarted under current conditions.
“The level of the cooling pond has dropped to 13.4 m, approaching the threshold of 12.0 m, below which cooling systems fail”, he emphasized.
Grossi also explained that measures to isolate the intake channel only provide a short-term solution to the problem, but a long-term solution is needed, for example, the construction of a pumping station.
“Continuous hostilities, particularly attacks very close to the ZNPP site, cause serious concern, adding stress and risk“, Grossi said.
