The Ministry of Finance called for the abolition of bank secrecy

Minister of Finance Serhiy Marchenko stated, that the State Tax Service should gain access to citizens’ financial data, which are currently considered bank secrets.
He emphasized that society should not be afraid of disclosure of bank secrecy, which, according to him, often serves as a cover for criminals and unscrupulous persons. The minister also noted that the abolition of bank secrecy for tax authorities is an important step in the process of European integration.
However, according to Marchenko, one of the main obstacles in this direction is the distrust of Ukrainians in state institutions. At the same time, he admitted that there is still no clear understanding of how this data will be used.
The minister specified that tax officials will not have access to financial data of specific individuals, but will work with general data sets for risk assessment.
“The taxman will not be specific to know who it is. It will be a database and they will work with risks.” – he explained.
We remind you that the term “bank secrecy” includes information about the financial status of clients. In some countries, this concept implies that banks do not have the right to provide data on personal accounts of customers to government authorities.
