The Nobel Peace Prize was awarded to a politician from Venezuela, María Corina Machado

The 2025 Nobel Peace Prize for “promoting the establishment of peace” was awarded to the Venezuelan politician Maria Corina Machado. This was reported on the website of the Nobel Foundation.

“The Nobel Peace Prize for 2025 is awarded to a courageous and dedicated defender of peace – a woman who keeps the flame of democracy alive in the midst of growing darkness. As the leader of the democratic movement in Venezuela, María Corina Machado is one of the most outstanding examples of civic courage in Latin America in recent times. Ms. Machado was a key unifying figure in a political opposition that was once deeply divided – an opposition that found common ground in demanding free elections and representative government, the statement said.

The Norwegian Nobel Committee has awarded the 2025 Nobel Peace Prize to María Corina Machado “for her tireless work in promoting the democratic rights of the Venezuelan people and for her struggle to achieve a just and peaceful transition from dictatorship to democracy”.

For the past year, Machado was forced to hide. Despite serious threats to her life, she remained in Venezuela, and this choice became an inspiration to millions of people. She was able to unite the opposition forces of her country, consistently opposed the militarization of society and consistently defended the idea of a peaceful transition to democracy.

Let us remind you that the Nobel Prize was founded by the Swedish inventor Alfred Nobel, who bequeathed his fortune to “the prize for those who during the previous year brought the greatest benefit to humanity”.

Since 1901, the award has been awarded to representatives from around the world for outstanding achievements in the fields of physics, chemistry, physiology or medicine, literature, and for their contribution to peace. Every year in October, new laureates are announced.
