The plane carrying the Spanish defense minister was attacked by GPS near Kaliningrad
An attempt to interfere with the GPS of a Spanish military aircraft carrying the head of the country’s Ministry of Defense, Margarita Robles, was recorded. The incident occurred near Kaliningrad, reports DEMOCRATA.ES.
Margarita Robles was on her way to Šiauliai Air Base in Lithuania on the A330 plane. This Wednesday, the aircraft experienced an attempt to interfere with the operation of the GPS system during the flight over Kaliningrad.
“The incident, which aimed to disable the GPS of a military aircraft, had no consequences because the aircraft is equipped to receive signals from a military satellite. One of the commanders present noted that such attempts are common in the area and affect both civilian and military flights, the message says.
During the flight, in addition to the minister, relatives of the VILKAS detachment personnel and journalists were on board the plane. The trip included a meeting with the Defense Minister of Lithuania with the aim of strengthening cooperation with NATO and countering Russia’s actions.
Since last year, GPS signal failures have been recorded over European countries. Russia’s use of an electronic warfare base in the Kaliningrad region was cited as the probable cause.
In particular, a very high level of GPS jamming was recorded in northern and eastern Poland, including Warsaw and south to the city of Lodz. Moreover, Estonia declared that Russia was responsible for GPS signal failures in the Baltic Sea region.
