The President of South Korea apologized for martial law, but did not resign

South Korean President Yoon Seok-yeol apologized to citizens for imposing martial law, but did not resign despite significant pressure from the ruling party. About this informs Reuters.

“I am very sorry and I would like to sincerely apologize to the people who were shocked.” Yoon Seok Yeol emphasized in a televised address, after which he bowed to the people.

Yoon Seok-yeol explained that the decision to impose martial law for the first time since 1980 was made out of desperation. He emphasized that he will not try to avoid political and legal responsibility for his actions.

The President also noted that he leaves it up to the Party of People’s Power to take measures to stabilize the political situation, including the question of the term of his presidential powers.

After the speech, party leader Han Dong-hoon said the president was “unable to fulfill his public duties” and his resignation was now “inevitable.”
