The President of the Czech Republic did not entrust the formation of the government to the ANO party, which won the parliamentary elections
President of the Czech Republic Petr Pavel held talks with the leaders of the ANO party, which won the most votes in the parliamentary elections. After the meeting, he announced that he did not instruct the party to form a new government, as it is “premature”. Petr Pavel said this during a press conference, reports Ceske Noviny.
The President of the Czech Republic noted that the formation of the new government should take place after the first meeting of the lower house of the parliament, to which elections were held:
“A new government can be appointed only after the current government resigns. He cannot resign before the constituent meeting of the new Chamber of Deputies takes place.
According to Petro Pavl, the leader of the ANO party Andrey Babish agreed with him about the prematureness of the decision on the formation of the government. The president of the Czech Republic believes that the parties that will form a coalition in the parliament should be given more time for negotiations.
The president also said that he considers the country’s pro-Western course and its stay in the European Union and the North Atlantic Alliance (NATO) as priorities, which, in his opinion, are the best guarantee of security and prosperity. Another priority, according to Petr Pavel, is the preservation of the institutions of a democratic state. He plans to monitor these parameters during all negotiations that will lead to the formation of a new cabinet of ministers.
We would like to remind you that on Saturday, October 4, two days of voting in the parliamentary elections ended in the Czech Republic. Polling stations closed at 14:00 local time. The turnout exceeded 50%, and in some districts – over 60%.
Czechs elected 200 deputies to the lower house of the parliament according to the proportional system for a term of four years. To overcome the passage barrier, the party had to gain at least 5% of the vote. These elections were also the first when Czech citizens abroad could vote by mail without visiting the embassy.
After counting 100% of the ballots in the parliamentary elections in the Czech Republic, the populist party of ex-prime minister and billionaire Andrey Babis won the “Action of Dissatisfied Citizens” (ANO), receiving 34.51% of the votes.
Second place was taken by the center-right ruling coalition “Together” (SPOLU) with a result of 23.36%, followed by “Mayors and independents” (STAN) with 11.23%. The Pirate Party together with the Greens gained 8.97%, and “Freedom and Direct Democracy” (SPD), which ran in alliance with several smaller far-right parties, received 7.78%. “ Motorists for themselves” gained 6.77%.
