Children of war

The return of Ukrainian children from Russia will be a key topic of the Global Peace Summit

In less than two weeks (June 15), the Global Peace Summit initiated by Ukraine to find ways to end the war peacefully will start in Switzerland. One of the key topics of the international event will be the return of Ukrainian children who were illegally taken to Russia or to territories not controlled by Ukraine. It will also be about the return of prisoners and such global issues as nuclear and food security.

The Ukrainian side has prepared several proposals that will stimulate the acceleration of the return of children to the Motherland. In particular, it is about expanding the package of economic sanctions against Russia and diplomatic pressure on the Russian Federation.

“We will appeal to the countries that will come to the Peace Summit to officially join the international coalition for the return of Ukrainian children (37 countries have already joined – ed.). We will also use new tools. First of all, it is diplomatic and economic pressure on the Russian Federation. Of course, I would very much like all countries to declare: let’s introduce a complete embargo on the purchase of Russian gas and oil until the Russian Federation returns all Ukrainian children, all Ukrainian citizens and stops this war, aggression. We are not getting there as fast as we would like, but gradually we are getting there. We will also discuss the limitation of Russia’s participation in all international organizations without exception,” he said Dmytro Lubinets, a human rights representative of the Verkhovna Rada.

Mr. Lubinets thanked the countries that privately help to return Ukrainian children, using their channels of influence on the Russian authorities.

We will remind you that out of more than 19,500 minor Ukrainians forcibly deported to the Russian Federation, only 669 have so far been returned.
