As part of a large-scale operation, the State Bureau of Investigation revealed numerous facts of torture and abuse of prisoners in correctional colonies of Ukraine. Special attention of the investigation was attracted by the state institution “Bozhkov Correctional Colony (No. 16)”, where four officials have already been informed of the suspicion of torture.
The investigation found that ill-treatment of new arrivals was systematic and widespread. Prisoners were beaten, forced to perform humiliating tasks, and sometimes even brought to death. Investigators have video evidence of these crimes, including a recording of a brutal beating of one of the inmates, who was hit more than 200 times.
The SBI is also investigating the possible involvement of the colony’s leadership and the North-Eastern interregional administration for the execution of punishments of the DKVS in the organization of the system of extortion and torture. In addition, the origin of the property of the head of the department, which significantly exceeds his official income, is checked.
