The Trump administration mistakenly sent an order to Ukrainians to leave the United States

This week, citizens of Ukraine, who are in the US on legal grounds as part of a humanitarian program, received e-mails notifying them of the cancellation of their status. The letters stated that they should leave the country within seven days, informs Reuters.

The reports said that if they did not comply with the requirement to leave the US by the deadline, the “federal government would find” them:

“If you do not leave the United States immediately, you may be subject to law enforcement action that will result in your removal from the country. We are reiterating: The Department of Homeland Security (DHS) is revoking your humanitarian status. Do not attempt to remain in the United States.”

On April 4, a spokesperson for the US Department of Homeland Security said that the letters were sent in error and that the humanitarian program for Ukrainians, put in place after the start of a full-scale Russian invasion in 2022, remains in effect. It is currently unknown how many Ukrainians received such letters.

DHS sent a follow-up message clarifying that the revocation order was erroneous:

“The terms of your humanitarian status previously issued remain unchanged for the time being.”

We will remind that on January 25, information appeared that officials of the US Department of Homeland Security decided to temporarily suspend some programs that allowed refugees to stay in the United States temporarily, in particular, a key initiative for Ukrainians. On March 6, Donald Trump said that he intends to consider the possibility of extending or revoking the legal status of Ukrainians who left the country because of the war.
