The US government has revoked the visas of at least 50 Mexican politicians and officials as part of a campaign against drug cartels and their possible political associates. reports Reuters.
Previous administrations also resorted to visa waivers, but not on this scale. This indicates the readiness of the current American leadership to use diplomatic tools to achieve political goals.
This move caused shock among Mexico’s political elite, who often visit the United States and for which they need visas. Visas were canceled for more than 50 representatives of the ruling Morena party, as well as dozens of officials from other political forces. So far, only four have publicly confirmed the loss of their visas. Among them is the governor of the state of Baja California, Marina del Pilar Avila, who categorically denied any ties to organized crime.
“Visas, including foreign official visas, may be revoked at any time for activities contrary to America’s national interests”, the US State Department said in a statement.
We will remind you that on October 11, the Southern Command of the US Armed Forces created a task force to combat drugs in the Western Hemisphere. The special unit will be engaged in tracking and intercepting drug shipments and exchanging intelligence data with law enforcement and military structures of the United States and other countries.
