‘This will drag the US into war”: Pentagon comments on refusal to shoot down Russian missiles and drones over Ukraine

The Pentagon explained why the shooting down of Russian missiles from the territories of Poland or Romania could involve the United States in a war with Russia.

On October 3, Deputy Spokesperson of the US Department of Defense Sabrina Singh at a briefing explained, that the situations in Israel and Ukraine are significantly different, and such actions could have serious consequences for the United States. According to her, any attempt to shoot down Russian missiles from the territories of NATO countries, such as Poland or Romania, will inevitably lead to escalation and involve the USA directly in a military conflict with Russia. This is an unacceptable scenario for the Pentagon, which is focused on providing Ukraine with weapons and support so that it can independently resist Russian aggression.

Sabrina Singh emphasized that since the beginning of the war, US President Joe Biden directed efforts to support Ukraine with exactly the resources it needs on the battlefield. She also reported that Defense Minister Lloyd Austin is in constant contact with his Ukrainian counterpart Rustem Umyerov, receiving up-to-date information on the situation at the front. This allows for a better understanding of Ukraine’s needs in military equipment and weapons.

However, Singh clearly stated that the US is not ready to directly intervene in the conflict due to the downing of missiles from the territories of NATO countries. She reminded that Ukraine is successfully defending its territory from Russian attacks and that the United States will continue to provide all necessary support for this.

This statement was made after a comment by President Volodymyr Zelenskyi, who repeatedly called on Western partners to shoot down Russian drones and missiles, following the example of the aid Israel receives. Zelensky stressed that similar support took place in the Middle East when Israel attacked Iran, and that the alliance must decide whether it values life in different countries equally.
