TikTok asks the Supreme Court to protect the app from a ban in the US

TikTok appealed to the US Supreme Court with a request to stop the law on the forced sale of the platform or its ban on the territory of the country. About this informs NBC News.

The law, titled “Protecting Americans from Apps Controlled by Foreign Adversaries,” requires the Chinese company ByteDance, which owns TikTok, to sell the platform to American businesses. Failure to meet this requirement will result in the application being blocked in the US.

TikTok previously tried to challenge the law in a federal appeals court, but was denied. The company has now filed an appeal with the US Supreme Court with a request to intervene in the situation by January 6, 2025.

“TikTok is asking the court to do what it traditionally does in free speech cases: apply the strictest scrutiny to the speech ban and conclude that it violates the First Amendment”, said TikTok spokesperson Michael G’use.

If the Supreme Court rejects the petition, the law will take effect on January 19, 2025. At the same time, the newly elected US President Donald Trump announced a meeting with the CEO of TikTok Show Ji Chu before the possible introduction of the ban. Trump added that he has a “warm spot” for the platform.
