Tourist bridge collapses in India: There are dead and injured

At least four people have been killed and 32 injured after an iron bridge collapsed across a river in a popular tourist area in the western Indian state of Maharashtra. About this informs Bloomberg with reference to local authorities.

Maharashtra Chief Minister Devendra Fadnavis said at least four people were killed and many others were washed away after an iron bridge over the Indrayani River collapsed in a popular tourist area near the western Indian city of Pune.

“Some people were washed away by the water, so the search operation is going on in military mode to find them,” – said Fadnavis.

According to him, six people were rescued, another 32 were injured, six of whom are in a critical condition. The National Disaster Response Force was dispatched to the scene, and other services remain on high alert. At the time of the collapse, dozens of tourists were on the bridge, many of whom ended up in the overflowing river.

The incident took place in Pune district’s Kundamala district, which has been experiencing heavy rains for the past few days, leading to a rise in the water level in the river. At the time of the bridge collapse, there was no rain in the place, which is frequented by picnickers.

India’s infrastructure has been plagued by safety issues for a long time, which periodically leads to major road and bridge accidents. In 2022, a century-old suspension cable bridge collapsed in the western state of Gujarat, trapping hundreds of people in the water and killing at least 132 people. This case became one of the largest in the country in the last decade.
