Tragedy off the coast of Sicily: a megayacht with a famous billionaire and his daughter sank

British tech entrepreneur Mike Lynch is among those missing after a luxury yacht sank off the coast of Sicily. About this informs The Wall Street Journal with reference to the Italian authorities.

The Italian coastguard has confirmed that six people, including Lynch and three British nationals, are still missing. At the time of the disaster, there were 22 people on board the yacht when it was caught in a strong thunderstorm on August 19.
It is also known that the chairman of the board of directors of Morgan Stanley, Jonathan Bloomer, was on the yacht.

Lynch’s wife, Angela Bacares, was among those who managed to escape, according to a person familiar with the situation.

The captain of the boat, Carsten Borner, who helped rescue the people, told the RAI TV channel that “the yacht overturned on its side and sank within a few minutes. Everything happened very quickly.”

“After the storm ended, we noticed that the yacht behind us had disappeared,” he added.

According to the publication, the yacht Bayesian, registered in Great Britain, was near the northern coast of the Italian island, not far from the capital Palermo.

The yacht is believed to have belonged to Mike Lynch.

In the 1990s, Lynch founded Autonomy, which was sold to the American technology company Hewlett-Packard for $11 billion in 2011. In 2018, the US government charged Lynch with fraud after Hewlett-Packard wrote off $8.8 billion related to the deal, saying it had been defrauded by inflated financial statements that inflated the value of the deal.
