Transportation of electronic cigarettes across the border: what Ukrainians need to know

Many Ukrainian refugees who have found themselves abroad continue to follow their habits, in particular smoking. In this regard, they are interested in the rules for transporting electronic cigarettes, especially disposable vapes, which have become a popular alternative to traditional tobacco products. However, problems may arise when crossing the border, as different countries have their own restrictions on the import of such devices. In some states, vaping is prohibited altogether, and breaking the rules can lead to fines or even more serious consequences.

Rules for transporting electronic cigarettes across the border

E-cigarettes and vaping liquids are classified as tobacco products, so their transportation is regulated by the customs laws of the country of destination. Although most states allow e-cigarettes for personal use, there are clear restrictions on the quantity. Most often, it is allowed to carry no more than two devices and a limited amount of liquid that can be transported without customs clearance.

According to the current regulations of most countries, the permitted limit for the transportation of electronic cigarettes and vaping liquids is set within the following limits:

  • Electronic cigarettes – no more than two units per person.
  • Liquid for vaping:
    • When transported by land transport – up to 10 ml.
    • For air flights and sea trips – up to 50 ml.

Such restrictions are in place to prevent the illegal importation of goods on a commercial scale and to ensure that they are used exclusively for personal use.

Special attention should be paid to the rules of air travel, as most airlines prohibit the transportation of vapes in checked baggage due to the risk of lithium batteries catching fire. Therefore, e-cigarettes must be stored in hand luggage, and vaping liquids must comply with the regulations for the carriage of liquids on board the aircraft.

Countries where the import of electronic cigarettes is prohibited

Despite the fact that vaping is widespread in the world, some countries have imposed a total or partial ban on the use and import of electronic cigarettes. Countries such as Thailand, Singapore, Australia, India, Laos, the Vatican, Qatar, Gambia and North Korea have severe fines and, in some cases, even criminal liability for importing or possessing vapes.

Specifically, in Thailand, violating e-cigarette laws can lead to up to 10 years in prison, and in Singapore, the fine for using or possessing vapes is up to $1,500. India, Lebanon, Syria and Nicaragua ban both the sale and use of vaping devices.

In some countries, there are restrictions not on personal use, but on the import of vapes from abroad. For example, the import of e-cigarettes is prohibited in Turkey, but tourists are allowed to bring their own devices.

Rules for transporting electronic cigarettes through Poland

Many Ukrainians travel through Poland, so it is important to consider local customs restrictions. Polish law classifies e-cigarettes as tobacco products, which means they can only be imported for personal use and in small quantities. If a traveler is found to be carrying too many devices or vaping liquids, customs authorities may consider this to be an attempted illegal importation, which may result in confiscation of the goods or a fine.

Persons under the age of 18 are prohibited from transporting electronic cigarettes, as well as from purchasing them in Poland. It is also worth paying attention to the rules of use – vaping is prohibited in public places of the country under the same conditions as smoking ordinary cigarettes.

What you should know before the trip

To avoid unpleasant situations when crossing the border, you should familiarize yourself with the rules for importing electronic cigarettes in the country of destination in advance. Before traveling, you should check customs restrictions and ensure that devices and liquids are within the permitted limits.

As legislation may change, it is recommended to periodically check official sources and rules of carriage. When in doubt, it is best to take the minimum number of devices to avoid the risk of confiscation or fines.

Transporting electronic cigarettes across the border is not just a formality, but an important aspect for those who are used to vaping in everyday life. Compliance with customs control rules will help avoid unnecessary problems during travel and ensure a comfortable experience for all travelers.
