Trump Administration Wants Green Card Applicants to Provide Their Social Media Profiles

Donald Trump’s administration has proposed a new requirement for green card applicants who are already legally in the US to submit their social media profiles for verification. About this informs Independent.

This initiative expands the current practice of collecting such data from visa applicants from abroad and aims to strengthen identity verification. In particular, identifiers in social networks will be used to verify those who apply for permanent residence or seek asylum in the United States. The proposal caused a wave of public outrage. Many believe that such actions violate the First Amendment to the US Constitution, which guarantees freedom of speech.

The initiative comes after a series of high-profile cases, including the detention of green card holder Mahmoud Khalil, who the administration accused of supporting Hamas, and the deportation of doctor Rasha Alawieh over suspected links to Hezbollah.

In addition, the Trump administration plans to expand checks for visa and “green card” holders. In particular, the possibility of concluding an agreement between the Internal Revenue Service (IRS) and the Immigration and Customs Enforcement (ICE) that will allow access to tax data of persons suspected of being in the country illegally is being considered.

These measures have raised concerns among human rights activists because of the risks of violating privacy and human rights.

We will remind you that the “green card” allows persons who are not US citizens to live and work in the USA. This is an identity document with a name and photo. A green card is proof of the immigration status of a lawful permanent resident.
