Trump announces suspension of trade talks between the US and Canada
US President Donald Trump announced the termination of trade negotiations between the US and Canada.
According to the head of the White House, the reason was a fake advertising campaign, which, according to him, was financed by the government of the Canadian province of Ontario. The video, as Trump quoted a statement from the Ronald Reagan Foundation, used without permission a recording of a 1987 radio address by former US President Ronald Reagan, in which he spoke about free trade and import tariffs.
“Due to their egregious behavior, all trade negotiations with Canada are being terminated immediately”, — Trump said.
As a reminder, on June 27, the US president announced that he was terminating all trade negotiations with Canada after the country introduced a digital services tax aimed at US IT companies. This tax was later repealed.
On August 1, Trump signed an executive order to increase tariffs on Canada from 25% to 35%. The document emphasized that goods that are eligible for preferential tariff treatment under the USMCA trade agreement are not covered by the new tariffs.
