Trump says Putin allegedly asked him to ‘settle’ war in Ukraine
US President Donald Trump said that during their last phone call, Russian leader Vladimir Putin allegedly asked him to “settle” the war in Ukraine. In addition, Trump criticized the UN for “complete inaction” on this issue. He reported this during a speech at the American Business Forum in Miami.
According to Trump, the conversation with Putin took place two weeks ago – their last contact was on October 16.
“I spoke with Putin two weeks ago, and he said, they say, we tried to settle this war for 10 years and could not do it. You have to sort this out, Trump said.
The White House also added that he had “sorted out some of these issues in an hour,” but did not specify what agreements he was referring to.
At the same time, Trump accused the United Nations of “total inaction” regarding the Russian-Ukrainian war and criticized its actions in other conflicts, which, he said, he managed to stop after returning to the White House in January 2025.
As a reminder, Trump has repeatedly expressed his disappointment with Putin, and on the eve of his meeting with Zelensky in Washington, he stated that the Russian leader could end the war against Ukraine.
On October 16, during a telephone conversation, Trump and Putin discussed the possibility of meeting in Hungary. The US did not specify a date at the time, but Trump said it could take place “within two weeks.”
On October 17, he said that the Kremlin leader was deliberately trying to “pull time” on the issue of peace talks with Ukraine.
On October 22, Trump canceled a planned meeting with Putin in Budapest. In response, Putin said that the meeting had not been canceled, but only “postponed.”
