South Korean President Charged With Treason

The Prosecutor’s Office of South Korea announced the suspicion of President Yoon Seok-yeol of treason and abuse of power. This was reported by a South Korean agency Yonhap.

“Numerous complaints have been filed and the investigation is ongoing in accordance with established procedures,” – said Park Se-hyun, who heads the special staff created to investigate the circumstances of the declaration of martial law.

According to the prosecutor, the investigation is aimed at establishing possible violations on the part of the president, in particular allegations of abuse of power.

The incident is related to the events of December 3, when Yoon Seok Yeol announced the imposition of martial law. He accused the opposition of blocking the work of the government and parliament, calling it “anti-state activity.” The president explained that this step was necessary to restore the “rule of law” and declared his intention to eradicate the so-called “pro-North Korean anti-state forces”.

Martial law included a ban on political activity, including rallies and protests, control over the media and the work of doctors on leave. However, six hours after martial law was imposed, the president canceled it.

The situation caused a significant response in the country. Prosecutors also arrested former Defense Minister Kim Yong-hyun on suspicion of treason. Kim himself resigned on December 5, taking responsibility for the consequences of martial law. He was replaced by retired general Choi Byung-hyeok.

A legal and political investigation into the case is ongoing, as the president’s actions have been widely criticized by the public and the opposition. Meanwhile, a special group has been created in the country to study in detail all the circumstances of the introduction and cancellation of martial law.
