Trump threatens to destroy Iran’s power plants if the Strait of Hormuz is not opened within 48 hours: Iran responds
Donald Trump said the US would “strike down” Iranian power plants if Iran did not open the Strait of Hormuz within 48 hours. Trump wrote about this in Truth Social.
“If Iran does not fully open, without threats, the Strait of Hormuz within 48 HOURS from now, the United States of America will strike their numerous power plants and destroy them, starting with the largest!”, – Trump wrote.
Tehran reacted to the US president’s 48-hour ultimatum and voiced even harsher threats in response. According to Al Jazeera and Wall Street Journal, the Iranian military has said that if its energy complex is attacked, the response will be directed at US energy, information technology, and desalination infrastructure in the region.
The WSJ notes that while oil and gas reserves remain the backbone of the region’s economy, millions of Middle Easterners depend on desalination plants to provide drinking water. The region is home to more than 40% of the world’s desalination capacity, or about 5,000 plants.
As is known, Iran blocked the Strait of Hormuz at the beginning of the war, which caused a large-scale oil crisis. This also caused fuel prices to rise in the US, and Washington began taking measures to unblock the strait.
Trump called on NATO allies to join in unblocking the Strait of Hormuz, but they refused, which angered the US president.
