Ukraine and Syria restored diplomatic relations
Ukraine and Syria signed a joint communiqué on the restoration of diplomatic relations. This was announced President of Ukraine Volodymyr Zelenskyy.
“We are glad of this important step and are ready to support the Syrian people on the path to stability”, – reported Volodymyr Zelenskyi.
The head of state said that during the talks with the President of Syria Ahmed al-Sharaa, the parties discussed promising directions for the development of cooperation, common security challenges and the need to overcome them.
“We agreed to build relations based on mutual respect and trust”, – emphasized Zelensky.
Recall that relations between Ukraine and Syria were frozen in 2014 after the beginning of Russian aggression against Ukraine in Crimea and Donbas. Then the Syrian representatives voted against the UN resolution on supporting the territorial integrity of Ukraine, confirming the status of an ally of Moscow.
In 2016, the Ukrainian embassy in Syria was evacuated to Lebanon due to the security situation, while the Syrian embassy in Ukraine worked until 2018. Diplomatic relations were officially severed in 2022 following a full-scale Russian invasion, when the Assad regime sided with the aggressor country.
