Ukraine has proposed that the EU grant it observer status in the process of reforming the Common Agricultural Policy

Ukraine has proposed to the European Union to grant it observer status in the process of reforming the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy. This was announced by Deputy Prime Minister for European and Euro-Atlantic Integration Taras Kachka.

During the meeting of the EU Council on Agriculture and Fisheries in Luxembourg, Taras Kachka presented the current state of the Ukrainian agricultural sector, production forecasts, bilateral trade indicators, and outlined Ukraine’s vision as a component of the common agri-food space of the European Union.

Among Ukraine’s proposals are obtaining observer status in the process of reforming the EU’s Common Agricultural Policy, resuming and expanding the EU-Ukraine agricultural dialogue with an emphasis on innovation, climate-smart agriculture, and strategic autonomy, as well as strengthening the exchange of experience and the creation of European-Ukrainian “super power” in the agricultural sector.

One of the key issues of the meeting was the renewal of the Agreement on the Deep and Comprehensive Free Trade Area between Ukraine and the EU.

“The renewed Agreement on the Free Trade Area is critically important for Ukrainian exporters, as it will help restore stability and predictability of trade flows between Ukraine and the EU. We are part of the European agricultural chain and we are pleased to confirm that Ukrainian agriculture is developing in accordance with EU standards,” Taras Kachka emphasized.

During the two-day meeting on October 27-28, EU ministers discussed the future Common Agricultural Policy after 2027, in particular its “green architecture”, the current situation on the EU agricultural market, the issue of fisheries in the Baltic Sea and other aspects.

As part of his visit to Luxembourg, Taras Kachka also held meetings with the Danish Minister of Food, Agriculture and Fisheries, Jakob Jensen, and the European Commissioner for Agriculture and Food, Christoph Hansen.

During the talks, the parties discussed further cooperation in the field of agriculture, food safety, veterinary control and sustainable development. They also considered the possibility of holding a new agricultural dialogue between Ukraine and the EU, exchanging experience and jointly forming a vision of Europe’s strategic autonomy in the food sector.
