Ukraine is negotiating a transitional period for duty-free trade with the EU

Ukraine is negotiating with the European Commission regarding autonomous trade measures with the European Union. Ukraine is counting on the introduction after June 5 of a certain transition period that will allow maintaining duty-free trade with the EU. About this reported Prime Minister Denys Shmyhal.

“Last year, when these rules and parameters were introduced for Ukraine, an agreement was also signed with the European Commission that appropriate changes will be made to Article 29 of the Association Agreement, in which appropriate trade preferences for our country will be established for the entire duration of the Association Agreement.” Shmyhal noted.

The European Commission has already started the relevant work, and the Ukrainian side has repeatedly discussed this issue during the negotiations and is currently actively working on the proposed option.

“As of today, the government of Ukraine is in negotiations… And by June 5, we expect to agree on a certain transitional option for visa-free trade with the European Union until the negotiations are concluded and Article 29.4 of the Association Agreement with Ukraine is amended.”– said the Prime Minister.

According to the new rules, annual duty-free quotas are planned to be divided into 12 separate monthly volumes. Previously, duty-free import of goods could stop several times a year — in March, June, August or October, depending on the specific type of product. Now such restrictions can be applied on a monthly basis.
