Ukraine launches a pilot project to implement 5G technology
Ukraine launches a pilot project to test 5G communications. The Cabinet of Ministers has approved amendments to the resolution regulating the use of radio frequency spectrum. This was announced by Minister of Digital Transformation Mykhailo Fedorov.
‘We are launching a 5G pilot in Ukraine. We will test 5G compatibility with military equipment in three cities. The pilot will last for 2 years and will take place in two stages. During the tests, the NCCC and the Ukrainian State Radio Frequency Centre will check whether 5G equipment does not affect the operation of military networks,’ said Fedorov.
He emphasised that 5G technology allows data transmission 10 times faster than 4G, which opens up new opportunities for transferring large amounts of information at high speeds.
Fedorov also emphasised that this pilot is an important step towards the full 5G rollout in Ukraine, which is scheduled to be completed by 2030.
In addition, the resolution will allow operators to use 2100 MHz frequencies not only for 3G but also for 2G and 4G technologies. The release of 694-862 MHz frequencies from analogue and digital television will also ensure their use for mobile communications.
5G is currently available in more than 90 countries, and the European Union plans to provide this technology to all cities and major motorways by 2025. Ukraine is adapting its radio frequency allocation rules to European standards to facilitate European integration.
