Ukraine, Lithuania and Britain have created an alliance to combat Russia’s grain theft

The Ministry of Agrarian Policy and Food of Ukraine, the Ministry of Agriculture of Lithuania and the Government of Great Britain signed a tripartite memorandum of understanding. Its purpose is to detect grain stolen by Russia from the occupied territories of Ukraine, which is transported through Lithuanian ports.

As reported Minister of Agrarian Policy of Ukraine Vitaly Koval, the document signed in Vilnius together with Lithuanian Minister Kazis Starkevičius is an important step in the fight against the illegal movement of Ukrainian grain. Thanks to the memorandum, participating countries will have the opportunity to introduce strict checks and legally oblige Russia and other high-risk countries to prove the legality of the origin of grain transported through Lithuanian ports.

This initiative is a joint response of Ukraine and its allies to Russia’s aggressive actions regarding the illegal appropriation of Ukrainian resources. The signed memorandum will help protect Ukrainian producers and strengthen international support in the fight against Russian theft.

As part of the agreement, a special inspection system “GVS” will be involved, which will prevent the transshipment of stolen grain through Lithuanian ports. This mechanism will strengthen control over the origin of agricultural products, increasing the responsibility of exporting countries.

At the same time, the Lithuanian side noted that strict inspections may increase the administrative burden, due to which goods from high-risk countries may become less competitive.
