Ukraine modernizes Soviet air defense systems

Soviet air defense systems, which are in service with Ukraine, are undergoing partial modernization. The “Buk” anti-aircraft missile complex actually got a new life. About this informs Deputy Minister of Defense Brigadier General Anatoly Klochko.

“The Buk air defense system has received a second life. Today it is armed with other missiles, it is already performing combat tasks. The S-300 is also waiting for major changes. This work is being carried out, we are not standing still. The time will come – we will say about it. We will say when there will be a practical result.”Klochko said.

According to him, this work is currently “on paper”, but, according to Klochka, more concrete results can be expected already in the second half of 2025.

The “Buk” air defense system is a self-propelled anti-aircraft missile complex designed to destroy missiles, airplanes, helicopters and other moving targets. Ukraine is armed with the Buk-M1 modification. As previously reported, the “Beech” was converted to use AIM-7 missiles.

The S-300 are medium-range anti-aircraft missile systems developed in Soviet times. Depending on the modification of the installation and interceptors, the maximum damage range can reach 150, 200 or 300 km.

We will remind you that in the summer of 2024, Volodymyr Zelenskyi said that Ukraine needs 25 Patriot complexes to completely cover the sky. He also noted that Ukraine is ready to purchase weapons and anti-aircraft systems worth $30-50 billion from the United States, in particular Patriot systems or obtaining a license for their production.
