Ukraine needs to attract more than 400 thousand labor migrants per year
There is significant structural unemployment in Ukraine, so the country will be forced to attract more than 400,000 migrant workers annually to cover the personnel deficit. About this stated Oleg Pendzyn, head of the Economic Discussion Club.
“You and I have huge structural unemployment. That is, for 2 million actually unemployed, we and you have a huge shortage of people in labor specialties: machine operators, fitters, engineering and technical workers, designers.”, he explained.
Pendzyn also noted that at the same time, there is a surplus of specialists in the fields of economics, jurisprudence and journalism on the labor market.
“In other words, with a sufficiently large number of formally unemployed people, you and I have huge structural unemployment. For example, you will not find truck drivers. Moreover, the situation is so difficult that Ukrainian demographers literally said back in 2024 that in order to balance the Ukrainian labor market, we need to bring in 450,000 labor migrants every year.”, he emphasized.
According to the Center for Economic Strategy, in 2024, every seventh Ukrainian remained without a job. Due to the lack of qualified personnel, competition between employers intensified, which led to an increase in wages.
