Ukraine officially terminates agreement on air service with Iran

On 8 November, the Cabinet of Ministers terminated the agreement on air services between Ukraine and Iran. The government’s representative in the Verkhovna Rada, Taras Melnychuk, announced this on Telegram.

According to him, the agreement, signed in July 1993, had been in force for more than three decades. However, flights from Ukraine to Iran were suspended in early 2020 after the Iranian military shot down a UIA passenger plane.

There were 176 people on board, including eleven Ukrainians (nine crew members and two passengers), and all of them died. According to Iran, the military mistook the plane for an American missile.

In July 2023, Canada, the United Kingdom, Sweden, and Ukraine appealed to the International Court of Justice in The Hague, demanding that Iran be held accountable for the deaths of their citizens in this disaster.

In response, Iran claimed that the countries were pursuing political interests by filing the lawsuit.
