Ukraine’s allies delay air defense support: Bloomberg

Some NATO member states are not fulfilling their promises to accelerate the delivery of air defense systems and other military equipment needed by Ukraine to counter a Russian offensive. About this informs Bloomberg, citing its sources.

According to the publication, several allies of the Alliance have still not fulfilled their obligations, which were confirmed at the July summit in Washington. The promised deliveries included sending at least five additional long-range systems.

Sources note that a significant part of the promised aid from NATO is unlikely to reach Ukraine until the fall. This creates risks, because it is during this period that Russia can intensify attacks on critical infrastructure, exploiting the vulnerability of Ukraine.

One of the officials noted that, despite the advance of Russian forces, support from Ukraine’s allies remains insufficient. Another interlocutor emphasized that some partners are lagging behind in the supply of military equipment, which negatively affects Ukraine’s defense capabilities.

Ukraine continues to call on international partners to provide the necessary means of air defense, in particular the Patriot system. Minister of Foreign Affairs Dmytro Kuleba emphasized the need to obtain at least 7 Patriot batteries, in particular through temporary borrowing, for the protection of large cities.

President Volodymyr Zelenskyi previously stated that 25 Patriot air defense systems or their analogues are needed to completely close the sky over Ukraine. However, the number of such systems already in Ukraine is not disclosed.

Despite these challenges, NATO Secretary General Jens Stoltenberg assured that the countries of the Alliance have committed to providing Ukraine with additional air defense systems. During the July summit, US President Joe Biden also announced the transfer to Ukraine of such systems as NASAMS, HAWK, IRIS-T SLM, IRIS-T SLS, as well as Gepard anti-aircraft systems.
