An outbreak of African swine fever was recorded in the Lviv region

An outbreak of African swine fever (ASF) — a dangerous viral infection that spreads rapidly, cannot be treated and causes mass death of pigs — has been recorded in the Lviv region. About this informs Lviv Regional State Administration.

“The day before, the corpses of six wild pigs that died of African swine fever were found in the woods near the village of Sukhoryechye (Pidberiztsivska TG of Lviv district)”, the message says.

The anti-epizootic commission under the Lviv RDA decided to introduce quarantine restrictions within a radius of 3 and 10 kilometers from the place of detection of the infection. In these zones, regular inspections of domestic animals will be carried out in order to detect possible cases of the disease in a timely manner. It is also planned to dispose of the bodies of wild pigs, which will significantly reduce the risk of further spread of the virus.

African swine fever (ASF) is a viral disease that affects both domestic and wild pigs. Infection occurs through direct contact with sick animals or their secretions, as well as through contaminated feed, water, transport, clothing or tools.

The virus can persist for a long time in the bodies of dead animals, fodder, and on objects that have had contact with infected pigs. The disease causes rapid death of animals within a few days after infection.
