Ukraine wants to increase the cost of higher education
In Ukraine, it is necessary to gradually increase the minimum cost of contract training in popular specialties. About this stated Deputy Minister of Education and Science Mykhailo Vynnytskyi.
“A strange situation has developed with the cost of the contract in our country. In Europe, universities set an upper limit for the cost of education, and in Ukraine – a lower limit (this is the so-called indicative cost price). Unfortunately, many higher education institutions set contract prices at half or even lower than the amount , which is paid by the state of the university for each budget student”, – said the official.
He explained that if the state allocates about 55-56 thousand hryvnias per year for the training of one budget student, then contract education often costs a student 25 thousand hryvnias. This raises a number of questions. In particular, the training of such contractors is partially financed at the expense of the state. Unfortunately, it is so, noted Vinnytskyi. Another important question concerns the quality of education: is it realistic to provide quality education at such a low cost?
“Of course, you can’t. This is also related to the issue of low teachers’ salaries. Due to the lack of funds at the university, the institution is unable to pay extra fees and bonuses, and then we are actually talking about the degradation of the system. Therefore, we need to gradually, not sharply, but definitely increase the cost of higher Understanding that our population’s ability to pay is low, we do not reduce the number of budget places and introduce a system of grants for strong students who do not get budget places.”, – summarized Vinnytskyi.
