Ukrainians in Poland can receive an additional payment – “Activation supplement”

After the start of the full-scale war, the number of Ukrainians who moved to Poland in search of asylum or work increased significantly. This country has not only opened its doors to Ukrainians, but also provides various forms of assistance, including social support for those who have lost their jobs. Among such types of assistance is the “Activization Allowance” (Dodatek aktywizacyjny), designed to support those who have already found work after unemployment.

This cash assistance is an important step to ensure a stable transition from unemployment to a new stage of employment. According to the new rules, Ukrainians who worked in Poland and found a job again after a period of unemployment can count on additional financial support. The main purpose of the application is to stimulate an active job search and support people during adaptation at a new workplace.

According to the current regulations, the payment of the supplement is 50% of the amount of unemployment benefits that the person received before employment. From June 1, 2024, the maximum amount of this assistance can reach PLN 831 gross, which is about PLN 731 net. Thus, if a person was receiving the maximum unemployment benefit, their new payment under this program will be half of that amount.

Duration of receiving assistance

The term of payment of the supplement is closely related to the period for which the unemployment benefit was initially assigned. If a person was supposed to receive unemployment benefits for four months, but found a job after two, additional payments will continue for another two months after employment. Payments are made monthly to the recipient’s bank account, which allows for a smooth transition from unemployed to employed.

In some cases, when the work is part-time or the salary is less than the minimum wage (which is PLN 4,300 gross as of July 1, 2024), the payment period may be extended.

Who can apply for additional assistance

Not all unemployed people who registered with the employment service can receive the “Activation supplement”. To apply for this assistance, you must meet certain criteria, including:

  • The right to receive unemployment benefits.
  • Self-employment or employment through the employment service.
  • Performing community service on a part-time basis for less than minimum wage.

However, there are cases when payment is not provided. For example, if a person found a job abroad or returned to his previous place of work, the payment is not accrued. Also, persons who are on unpaid leave do not have the right to receive this benefit until they leave.

Assistance registration procedure

In order to receive the “Activation Supplement” you must submit a certain package of documents to the employment service:

  1. Application for payment.
  2. Certificate of employment from the employer.
  3. Employment contract (work condition (umowa o pracze), zlecenie condition (umowa zlecenia) or work condition (umowa o dzieło) – depending on the type of employment relationship.
  4. Certificate of income to determine the amount of payments.

This benefit is taxable, so recipients must report it on their PIT tax return in the appropriate section.

Thus, Poland takes a step towards those who resume their careers after a period of unemployment, supporting them not only morally, but also materially.
