Ukrainians on trial in Stuttgart on suspicion of spying for Russia
The trial of three Ukrainian citizens accused of spying for Russia has begun in Stuttgart. According to information Deutsche Welle, they are 22-year-old Danylo B., 25-year-old Vladislav T., and 30-year-old Yevhen B.
The investigation believes that they installed GPS trackers in postal items in Constanta and Cologne to track their route from Germany to Ukraine and transmit this data to the Russian side. It is noted that they received the task through intermediaries in Mariupol, which is under Russian control.
In addition, the defendants are suspected of preparing sabotage: according to the investigation, they could have tried to plant explosive devices in parcels sent through the territory of Germany or to Ukraine in order to “cause as much damage as possible and undermine the population’s sense of security.”
It was previously reported that in July 2024, parcel explosions occurred at DHL logistics centers in the United Kingdom, Poland, and Germany. According to the Financial Times, Russian-recruited agents who were in possession of explosives capable of “causing more disruption to the airline industry than any terrorist act since the attacks on the World Trade Center on September 11, 2001.”
