Ukrainians were warned about a new fraud scheme in Viber

Center for Strategic Communications and Information Security warned about a new fraud scheme aimed at stealing personal data of Viber users.

“Attention! Fraudsters have launched a new scheme to steal personal data of Viber users”, – the message says.

Criminals, posing as representatives of well-known services or companies, ask users to “enter an SMS code” allegedly to check registration, confirm an account or activate a new mobile tariff plan.

Experts explained that this SMS code allows you to activate a Viber account on another device, giving fraudsters access to the user’s account.

To protect your data, you should:

  • do not provide activation codes;
  • block suspicious messages;
  • limit contacts from unfamiliar users;
  • use privacy settings to protect accounts.
